Capitula radiate or discoid, solitary or in lax corymbs, pedunculate; involucral bracts 2- or 3-seriate, subequal, herbaceous with broad scarious margins; receptacle convex, elongating in fruit, with conspicuous narrow scales. Ray florets female or sterile, 1-seriate, ligulate, white (usually), yellow or reddish; style branches linear with papillose apices or absent. Disc florets bisexual, tubular; corolla 5-lobed, white, yellow or rarely reddish; anthers obtuse at base, with an ovate apical appendage; style with broad-linear, truncate branches, apices papillose. Ray and disc cypselas similar, turbinate, sometimes compressed, smooth or tuberculate, 4- or 5-angled and/or 10-ribbed; pappus a minute crown, an auricle or absent.
