Small glabrous annuals. Leaves rosetted at base, linear to very narrow-elliptic. Flowering stems simple, 1-flowered, arising from base of plant; sepals 5, narrowly spurred, spurs descending and appressed to stalk; petals 0–7, dilated or tubular toward apex, usually smaller than sepals; stamens 5–20. Achenes numerous, shortly beaked; fruiting receptacle and pedicel greatly elongating in fruit.
About 15 species (but poorly defined), from temperate areas; 1 species in Australia.
