Zoopsis
Epiphytic, on logs or rarely terrestrial, dioecious. Asexual reproduction rarely by fragmenting leaf lobes (not in Victoria). Stems frequently but irregularly branched, with two ranks of lateral leaves and a rank of underleaves; branches emerging from main stem laterally and replacing an entire lateral leaf, or emerging from main stem beside a lateral leaf reduced to a single lobe and without a collar of tissue at base, or emerging from main stem near underleaves and with a collar of tissue at base. Lateral leaves remote to contiguous (not in Victoria), alternate, collectively green and lustrous, clearly differentiated into a disc and 2 equal (not in Victoria) or unequal lobes and succubous, or longitudinal and reduced to 2 or rarely up to 6 cells, with the two projecting cells each with a terminal papilla-like appendage, or rarely with leaves restricted to near stem apices and reduced to a single cell and terminal papilla-like appendage (not in Victoria); terminal papilla-like appendage when present crescentic, smooth, single-celled and appressed to apex of projecting leaf cell or (not in Victoria) falcate, roughened, two-celled and often arching over adaxial leaf. Underleaves minute, bilobed usually with 2–4 disc cells with a single cell per lobe each with a terminal papilla—like appendage or rarely disc and lobes composed of more cells (not in Victoria), remote. Leaf cells polygonal to oblong, smooth, thin-walled, without trigones, with up to 10 grey, spherical, fusiform or ellipsoid and finely granular or granular-botryoidal oil bodies. Rhizoids clustered at underleaf bases and sometimes from bases of lateral leaves. Androecia on short branches emerging from abaxial main stem, with up to 7 pairs of more prominently bilobed bracts, each with one antheridium. Sporophyte at apex of short branch emerging from abaxial main stem, composed of 2–5 series of progressively larger bracts. Perianth urceolate to cupulate or cylindric (not in Victoria); mouth deeply divided into 6 linear-lanceolate lobes or dentate (not in Victoria). Capsule ellipsoid, 2–3-stratose; elaters bispiral. Spores spherical, areolate.
Ten species Mostly in New Zealand where eight species occur and south-east Australia with three, but one species extending to New Caledonia, one species extending through Malesia to Japan and an another species endemic to Malesia (Schuster 1999; Renner et al. 2006); two species in Victoria.
