Tufted annuals or perennials. Inflorescence a panicle. Spikelets several-flowered, the uppermost barren; glumes 2, persistent, 1-nerved, shorter than lemmas; lemma narrow, membranous, 3–5-lobed, the central lobe notched, each lobe with a single nerve exserted as an awn or mucro; palea 2-nerved, apically notched, hyaline, shorter than lemma.
10 species, 9 from tropical and southern Africa; 1 from Australia.
