Flowers bisexual, solitary in leaf axils; perianth cylindrical, 5-lobed; stamens 5; stigmas 2. Fruiting perianth hardened, with 5 erect spine-like appendages that are ± united into an apical cup; pericarp membranous; seed vertical; testa membranous.
