Sematophyllum jolliffii
(Hook.f.) DixonAutoicous. Asexual propagules absent. Dense, glossy mats on soil and rocks, occasionally submerged. Stems to 16 cm long or more, sparsely and irregularly branched with cuspidate branches, with very sparse rhizoids, central strand absent. Leaves moderately homomallous, elliptic, 1.5–1.75 mm long, 0.6–0.75 mm wide, concave, erecto-patent or spreading when moist, similar when dry; costa absent; apex broadly acute to short acuminate; margins entire or slightly denticulate, plane or broadly inflexed on one side near base; cells oblong-linear to narrowly elliptic, 48–72 (–85) μm long, 4–6 μm wide, becoming markedly shorter in apex and to more than 100 μm long near base; alar cells 2–3 (–4), oblong, in extreme alar angles, strongly inflated, hyaline. Setae 10–15 mm long, red-brown, mammillate-papillose near capsule, rarely ±smooth throughout. Capsule oblong-cylindric or ovoid, inclined to pendent, straight, (0.8–) 1–1.5 mm long. Operculum oblique-rostrate from conic base, (0.8–) 1–1.5 mm long.
GipP, GGr, EGL, EGU, WPro, HSF, OtR. Uncommon in wet sites, often near or in creeks in rainforests and sclerophyll forests south or along the Great Dividing Range. Also NSW and Tas. New Zealand.
