Terrestrial. Specialised asexual propagules absent. Thallus green to olive-green or with a reddish tinge, expanding from a prostrate or erect stipe, simple, sparingly furcate or repetitively furcate and forming an apical frond section, sometimes branching from abaxial midrib, sometimes dissected to the midrib into several lobes (not in Victoria); margins serrate or entire, plane or undulate. Rhizoids abaxial along base of stipe. Antheridia adaxial in one to three rows on the midrib, superficial, each covered by irregular-shaped scale. Sporophyte on adaxial costa, usually at fork of thallus, subtended by an involucre and surrounded by a shoot calyptra; involucre scale-like, attached basal to the sporophyte, entire (not in Victoria), bifid (not in Victoria) or laciniate; shoot calyptra fleshy, tubular; pseudoperianth absent. Capsule cylindric, bistratose, dehiscing by 2 (not in Victoria) or 4 valves; elaters 2-spiral. Spores spherical, areolate, brown.
Thirty-eight species shared throughout southern temperate to tropical regions (Söderström et al. 2016); two species in Victoria.
