Persicaria subsessilis
(R.Br.) K.L.Wilson Hairy KnotweedRhizomatous perennial, stems ascending to erect, to c. 1 m high, sparsely to densely covered with coarse appressed hairs. Ochreas long-ciliate at apex, appressed-pubescent on sheath. Leaves narrowly lanceolate, 6–15 cm long, 5–15 mm wide, subsessile, lamina sparsely to moderately densely covered with short, subappressed bristles. Spikes cylindric, 3–8 cm long, 4–10 mm diam., dense to rather loose, sometimes interrupted near base; peduncle c. 2–8 cm long, sometimes forked; perianth segments 2.5–4 mm long, white to pale pink, free from half to two-thirds their length. Nut ovate, biconvex or obscurely trigonous, 2.5–3 mm long, c. 2 mm wide, smooth and shining, blackish. Flowers Jan.–Apr.
VVP, VRiv, GipP, OtP, WaP, CVU, EGL, EGU, HSF, OtR, Strz, HFE. Also WA, Qld, NSW, Tas. New Guinea, New Caledonia. Occasional along streams, chiefly in the south-east, rather rare in the west (e.g. Gellibrand River, Ballarat area), often in cool forested areas.
